The 8th Annual Postdoctoral Research Day (PDRD) was held on September 19 in the Academic Rotunda, bringing together researchers from UConn Health and The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine to share their research. This half-day event included oral presentations, poster presentations, and keynote speeches by postdoctoral fellows.
PDRD is an annual event celebrating postdoctoral research. This event was attended by 70 people, including faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdocs.
“PDRD is an opportunity for the UConn Health and Jackson Laboratory communities to come together and learn about all the great research our postdocs are doing, while also providing postdocs with a highly visible platform to introduce themselves to everyone. ” said UConn Health’s director of postdoctoral affairs. Dr. Chris Heinen.
The afternoon event began with a warm welcome from Dr. Heinen, who emphasized the important role of postdocs in building a strong and collaborative research community.
This was followed by 19 postdocs giving research talks as part of the annual Speak4Science competition, each taking four minutes and one slide to explain the importance of their research questions. Three awards were awarded for the best research presentations. Anirudhya Lahiri, Moriah Turcotte, Lisa Ren.

“We really enjoy hearing about each other’s research,” said Sama Abdulmalik, a member of the UConn Health and Jackson Laboratory PostDoctoral Association (UJPDA).
Dr. Brian Coombs, distinguished professor and chair of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, served as the event’s keynote speaker and was introduced by UJPDA member Patience Shumba. Coombs’ research focuses on gut bacteria associated with acute and chronic human diseases, including Crohn’s disease.
The final event of the day was a reception that combined poster presentations and networking opportunities. Researchers presented their latest discoveries and sparked useful discussion and conversation.
