Former first lady Melania Trump appeared to defend abortion rights in a video posted to X this morning.

“Personal freedom is a fundamental principle that I uphold. There is no room for compromise when it comes to this important right that every woman is born with. Personal freedom. My body, my choices. What does that mean?” she says in the video.

Asked for comment, Sarafina Titica, a spokeswoman for the Harris campaign, said in a statement: “Sadly for women across the country, Mrs. Trump’s husband is adamantly opposed to her; These are the reasons why we live under Trump’s abortion ban, and why we are threatened by President Trump’s abortion ban.” Their health, their freedom, and their lives. ”

“Donald Trump has made it abundantly clear that if he wins in November, he will ban abortions, punish women, and limit women’s access to reproductive health care across the country,” she said. added.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

Her post came after The Guardian reported that the former first lady would write about defending abortion rights in her upcoming memoir.

The former president says the abortion issue should be left to individual states after the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade in 2022.

During last month’s presidential debate, President Trump broke with his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, by saying that if he were reelected, he would not sign a federal anti-abortion bill because it was unnecessary. During Tuesday’s vice presidential debate, President Trump published a post on Truth Social saying he would veto such a ban for the first time.
