The University of Akron Career Services and Student Employment Office will hold an Internship and Career Fair on Wednesday, October 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union Ballroom.
Open to students and graduates from all majors and programs, the career fair features over 100 employers from a variety of industries and practice interview opportunities. Students can also ask questions about companies they would like to work for someday.
“Even if you’re not looking for an internship or full-time job right now, you can gain experience in what it’s like to introduce yourself to an employer,” said Mary Cook, Career Services and Student Employment Coordinator. says. .
Before the career fair, Cook suggested students meet with a career services advisor to review their resumes.

She also spoke about the usefulness of Handshake, a job board that lists opportunities for students at the University of Akron.
When students upload their resumes to Handshake, they are automatically reviewed by career services advisors, who receive feedback via email.
A complete list of employers can be found on Handshake’s Career Fair Events page. There, students can find out what kind of jobs employers are looking for.
If the student already has an employer in mind, they can check to see if that employer is attending.
Cook emphasized how a face-to-face meeting can make a big difference when applying for a job.
If students would like to meet with an advisor, Career Services offers both virtual and in-person interviews. Students can also email their resumes to Career Services.
On the day of the career fair, students can visit the Preparation Room. The Preparation Room aims to help students speak confidently to employers. This room, located behind the check-in table, is a space for students to practice their elevator pitches and review employers attending the fair.
We have an internal Career Services and Student Employment Coordinator to provide support to our students.
“We encourage students to wear business dress,” Cook said. We also encourage students to bring their resumes. If desired, Career Services has a folder that students can use to carry their resumes with them.
The preparation room also provides a safe place for students to leave their belongings while they explore the career fair.
Cook said even students who don’t have a specific job or company in mind and just want to gain experience talking to potential employers take advantage of the event.
“This is a great lesson in career development,” Cook said.
