Joy Dupree has been recognized for her passion, advocacy, and commitment to health literacy at UAB in Alabama and across the nation.
Dr. Joy Dupree Dr. Joy Dupree, a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, has been inducted into the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to health policy and health literacy in Alabama and across the nation. .
Dupree, co-director of the school’s Leadership and Health Policy Initiatives and director of Health Policy Partnerships, is one of only two nurses selected for this year’s class of 13 health care leaders.
“Being inducted into the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame is extremely humbling,” Dupree said. “While I have great respect for the other Hall of Fame members, I never imagined I would be included in this select group of healthcare leaders.”
Established in 1997, the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates outstanding health care professionals who have made impactful contributions to the state of Alabama.
Dupree has been a nurse for 29 years and a board-certified women’s health nurse for 26 years. Throughout her career, she has engaged in health policy advocacy, research, and education work at the state, national, and international levels regarding health literacy and women’s health. She is widely known for her advocacy for people who face challenges in understanding medical information.
Mr. Dupree served on the school’s faculty from 1999 until his retirement in 2019, returning to the school full-time in 2023 to co-lead the health policy division of the new Leadership and Health Policy Initiative with Maria R. Shiley, Ph.D. led. ., Dean of the School of Nursing and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair.
Throughout her career, Dupree’s work in health literacy and health policy has evolved. She first became interested in literacy through her eldest daughter, who volunteered as a reading tutor. This experience had an incredible impact on her and sparked a passion for health literacy.
