Daniel Sperling, professor of civil engineering, environmental science, and policy and founding director of the Transportation Institute at the University of California, Davis (ITS-Davis), is the 2024 recipient of the American Highway and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Award. is. Named after the first president of ARTBA Research and Education, the Steinberg Award recognizes “individuals who have made outstanding contributions to transportation education.”
Mr. Sperling has been a researcher and educator for more than 40 years, conducting transportation research and teaching at the University of California, Davis, and leading ITS-Davis to become a global leader in sustainable transportation. He has authored or co-authored 13 books and more than 250 papers and reports, and has led a series of influential centers and institutions at the University of California, Davis, including an award-winning interdisciplinary graduate program in transportation technology and policy. Outside of academia, Mr. Sperling has held numerous leadership roles on committees of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. This included chairing the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee, Standing Committee on Alternative Fuels and Sustainable Transportation, and serving on 15 studies. He was also a member of the California Air Resources Board’s Transportation Committee for 16 years, chaired the California Fuel Cell Partnership, and currently serves as co-executive director of the World Transportation Research Association.
Mr. Sperling also serves on numerous advisory boards for businesses, government agencies, universities, NGOs, and national laboratories, and has testified before Congress eight times.
Among his notable awards and honors are the Lifetime Achievement Award in Research and Teaching (2024) by the American Council of University Transportation Centers; Admission to the National Academy of Engineering (2022). Roy Cram Award for Research and Service by TRB (2018), the highest research award. The Asahi Glass Foundation Blue Planet Prize winner (2013) is a “pioneer in pioneering new areas of research to build more efficient, lower-carbon, and environmentally beneficial transportation systems.” Heinz Award for the Environment (2010) for “her work in researching alternative transportation fuels and her commitment to implementing cleaner transportation policies in California and across the United States.”
Sperling also contributes significantly to the transportation industry by developing and producing a new generation of researchers and leaders in academia, government, and industry, and by inspiring many students who go on to become transportation industry leaders. It has had a great influence.
