(WIFR) – The Health Resources and Services Administration announced it will donate $1.5 million to the University of Illinois at Chicago to address the maternal health crisis.
The state’s Maternal and Child Health Innovation Program develops strategies to address maternal mortality in Illinois. The funding comes as part of the Strengthening Maternal Health initiative.
The initiative works with women, community organizations, and state and local officials to improve maternal health outcomes.
Some of the key actions HRSA has taken to date include:
Launched the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (833-TLC-MAMA) to provide pregnant and newborn mothers and their families with 24/7 mental health support by phone or text. Expand home visiting services by providing $105 million in grants to local organizations that provide home visiting. Human resources such as nurses and social workers will be dispatched through the Mother and Child Home Visiting Program. Expand Healthy Start services by investing $105 million in community-based organizations to improve Healthy Start to support maternal and child health outcomes. Increase the number of obstetricians and gynecologists, nurses, midwives, doulas, and community health workers. Investing more than $65 million in community health center initiatives to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities for high-risk patients. Support maternal health care in rural areas through funding. Rural obstetric management strategy program to improve care in rural areas. Rural areas in the South also received $9 million.
Other programs implemented by HRSA include early detection and treatment of hypertension, mobile simulation training for health care workers, expanding training available to rural hospitals without obstetric departments, and providing resources to emergency responders. there is.
