The research festival featuring visiting academics hosted by the Isle of Man’s higher education institutions is set to return for its sixth edition.
Topics expected to be discussed at the 2024 event include sustainability, artificial intelligence (AI), well-being, and more.
The free event, hosted by University College of the Isle of Man (UCM), will take place on October 18th at the Nunnally Campus in Douglas.
UCM higher education manager Gail Collin said the event continues to “reflect topics of interest and concern in our community.”
The 2024 event will feature a keynote speech entitled ‘The Story of Place’ by media entrepreneur Jens Bachem, who will discuss how each of us can help shape a better future for the Isle of Man through research. The focus is on whether we can contribute to
“Useful and interesting”
Other presentations included a talk entitled ‘Social Singing Circles’ by Sarah McCarthy from Victoria University of London, and a talk by UCM graduate Laura Perkins on how the Isle of Man perceives cybercrime. The event will include a talk by Thomas Hull from Sheffield Hallam University, who will discuss research on AI and heart disease. .
The program will also include the Great Interactive Debate exploring AI innovation, chaired by Jason Bissell from the Department of Enterprise.
And UCM Honorary Fellow Fiona Gell will present her research on the natural history of the Manx Sea, which won this year’s Corlett Bolton Research Award.
Colin said: “Whatever your interests, industry or specialty, this year’s Research Festival truly offers something for everyone.
She said it was “really inspiring” to see how the festival’s program “continues to reflect topics of interest and concern in our community.”
That way, the sixth event will be “informative and interesting for all researchers, students and business communities alike,” she added.
