OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The University of Nebraska Medical Center on Thursday shared its vision for its newest development area, which will begin with the name EDGE District.

The name is an acronym for Explorer, Development, Grow, and Engage. In its new development, UNMC hopes to foster research and entrepreneurship, encourage start-ups, and even accelerate their progress.

Located on 30 acres across the street from the main medical campus, UNMC offers the district an opportunity to expand research capacity, foster and accelerate innovation, support and guide business growth, and collaborate through social spaces. aims to promote.

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the University of Nebraska System’s new chancellor, said the latest additions will keep UNMC competitive.

“The EDGE District is not only a place where innovation and discovery takes place, but it also provides the infrastructure that allows startups to bring their developments to market here, rather than fleeing to the coast or elsewhere. “We are not just a local or regional asset, but a key player on the global stage, poised to lead healthcare transformation.”

Located in the 1906 Omaha Steel Foundry Industrial Area, the 170,000-square-foot Catalyst Building will house the UNMC Innovation Hub as well as 130,000 square feet for businesses, including a food hall, taproom and restaurant. The plan focuses on EDGE’s slogan: “Where innovation meets lifestyle.”

The Catalyst building is scheduled to begin hosting events soon and is expected to fully open in early 2025.

Meanwhile, the Campus Operations and Research Excellence building, known as CORE, will house an incubator lab that will provide shared facilities and office areas with startups in mind.

The development will also include a 750-space parking garage, with plans to wrap the building in food and beverage, retail, residential and green space. The city will own the garage, but plans for the rest of the building must be approved by the University of Nebraska Board of Trustees.
