TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – The city of Tyler, Texas hosted its third annual Pre-Health High School Conference on Wednesday.
Students from across East Texas were able to attend a variety of sessions and discover more resources about a wide range of medical and first responder professions.
“It helps them understand what they want to be. It also helps them understand that there are multiple paths to getting into college and the lifestyle that they want. It basically helps them understand what they want to be. We try to show them everything we can,” said Patricia, SUPERNet coordinator and event partner who helped UT Tyler launch the event three years ago. Maddox said.
During one of the sessions, students were able to speak with Sierra Ward, an anesthesiologist who works with Christus Mother Francis.
Ward, who graduated from UT Tyler before entering the field, said participating in the event was a “full circle moment” where she was able to help kids in her position.
“It’s an incredible experience. It’s a great feeling to be able to give back. I wish I had had this experience when I was their age. Their questions were so engaging, so passionate and enthusiastic. , I love being able to talk to these students and get to know them and hopefully encourage them to pursue a future in the medical field,” Ward said. Some high school students may be worried about not knowing what they want to do after graduation.
One student said being able to see the options available and even talking to people in the field helps them find what they like best.
“Do they actually like doing it? Does it bring a smile to their face? Or does it let me know, ‘Wow, this job is really great.'” I see them flourishing and growing more and more because they’re still getting older, and it shows me that I can do the same things that they do,” said the senior at Chapel Hill High School in Tyler. Rajada Doshi said.
