History Allendale, MI – The Michigan Technological University volleyball team lost 3-1 to No. 13 Grand Valley State University on Saturday. The Huskies took the third set against the Lakers, but lost 26-24, 25-18, 12-25, 25-21.

“Today was much better than last night, but that’s not our standard,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “We were in a position to win the first and second set, but we just couldn’t win. Grand Valley is a great team, they have all the pieces, and they haven’t lost to anyone other than undefeated Ferris. There were moments where we were outclassed and we were able to get the win.”The control was good, but Grand Valley simply knew how to finish. We contained a pretty good offense down the stretch and Paige served really well in this match.

“Wednesday we shift our focus to Northern. It’s always a great battle and we’re excited to play on our home court.”

The first game had nine ties and four lead changes. Tech held a set point lead, but once the Lakers took the lead, they gave up three consecutive points. GVSU held eight more kills than the Huskies in the second set and led by as many as seven kills to lead 2-0 at the break.

Tech fought back in the third with a resounding 25-12 victory. The Huskies had 13 kills and held the Lakers to eight errors and a -.129 batting average. Four different Tech players had at least two kills, with Meg Raabe and Rachel Zurek each having four kills.

GVSU (20-1, 9-1 GLIAC) shut out the game in four innings. Both teams were tied at 17 points, with the home team winning 8-4.

Meg Rabe led the Huskies with 14 kills. Rachel Zurek (8), Jacqueline Yancey (7), Paige Wagner (7) and Casey Miners (6) also contributed to the balanced attack. Tess Hayes had 39 assists and 12 digs. Bryn Erickson was one shy of her season high with 16 digs. Amelia Albers (13) and Jacqueline Yancey (11) also scored in double digits defensively.

The Huskies, 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC, return to the SDC gym to complete their home schedule, hosting Northern Michigan on Wednesday, Parkside on Friday and Purdue Northwest on Senior Day on Saturday.
