PETALTO, Miss. (WDAM) – Educators in the Petal School District are on a mission to educate young minds.
On Thursday, educators invited Nick LaCour, a member of the First Alert Weather Team, to join those who have dedicated their lives to some type of public service.
Dozens of Pine Belt’s youngest residents not only learned what it means to be an essential worker, but also what to do when a life-threatening situation can occur or is about to occur.
One of the local educators who attended the event was Debbie Kreiser.
“We’re trying to teach the little panthers here at Petal who can help them if something goes wrong,” Kreiser said. “We have firefighters, police, ambulances, linemen and of course (Lacour).
“So we’re trying to help them know who to call if they need help.”
The Junior Panthers learned about the importance of being weather aware when there is a storm on the horizon, as well as how weather affects their daily lives.
The children were also able to demonstrate how all the carriers that took part in the event work in conjunction with each other.
Nickelia McCallum also attended the event on behalf of Oasis Training Center.
“(Thursday) was a lot of fun taking the kids out to learn more about community development,” McCollum said. “I think it’s great that (they) held this event so that (the kids) could learn more about their community.”
