What is the technology? How to spot counterfeits

Amazon Prime Day and the upcoming holiday shopping season is a great time to score great deals, but it’s important to be wary of counterfeit products. Counterfeits can be found in a variety of categories, from electronics to clothing to toys.

Amazon is actively working within its Counterfeit Crime Unit to identify sellers involved in selling counterfeit products. In 2023, Amazon banned more than 7 million counterfeit products from its online store.

Although Amazon’s efforts are removing items, it’s still important for shoppers to carefully check whether they’re ordering what they think they’re ordering before making a purchase.

Here are some tips to avoid falling victim to counterfeit sellers.

1. Vet the seller.

Check seller ratings and reviews: Look for sellers with high ratings and positive reviews. Be wary of sellers with limited history or overwhelmingly negative feedback. Pay attention to seller information: Genuine sellers will provide clear contact information and business details. If this information is missing or appears suspicious, proceed with caution. Beware of “new” sellers: New sellers may be legitimate, but they also don’t have an established track record. Especially for big-ticket items, consider purchasing from more established sellers.

2. Carefully inspect the product list.

Compare prices: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Counterfeit products often lure buyers with significantly lower prices than trusted sellers. Explore product images and descriptions: Look for high-quality images and detailed descriptions. Blurry images and vague descriptions can be red flags. Check brand approvals. When purchasing branded products, check to see if the seller is licensed to sell them. Watch for typos and grammatical errors. A poorly written product description can raise red flags. Signs of a fake seller.

3. Critically read customer reviews:

Look for confirmed purchases. Reviews from verified buyers are generally more reliable. Please pay attention to the content of reviews. Read reviews carefully for any mention of product quality, reliability, or seller experience. Be skeptical of overly positive reviews. If all the reviews are glowing, then it is reliable. This could be a sign of a fake review.

In one review I found of the Nintendo Switch gaming system, a verified purchaser said the colors were incorrect. It was also vulnerable and my device was not found when I tried to log into my Nintendo account. They discovered this after the return period ended, so the $300 I paid was wasted.

4. Trust your intuition:

If something about a product or seller doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Amazon has many other sellers and products.

Remember: Amazon is taking steps to combat counterfeit products, but it’s still important to be a smart shopper.
