You’d be forgiven for missing the flurry of news about escalating violence in the Middle East, the vice presidential debate, the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Helen, and the historic longshoremen’s strike that could have had significant economic consequences. But this week, it got a lot of attention. Annual Forbes 400 List Announces Definitive Ranking of America’s Richest People
As my colleagues on the Wealth team have pointed out, America’s 400 richest people are “having fun in the turbulent 2020s. Collectively, they’ve made nearly $1 trillion more than last year, a record 50%.” ” And while the gender wealth gap in this group remains large, with only 67 of these 400 being women, the gap has narrowed, at least slightly. It’s coming. Women now make up 17% of the list, up from 15% last year, and women hold 15% of total assets in the 400s, up from 14% in 2023. The women are worth a combined $839 billion, up from the House’s $621 billion. Last year’s list included 60 women.
The richest woman in the 400s is Alice Walton, who has held the title for nine of the past 10 years. What’s new and noteworthy about Walton is her philanthropy. Recently released tax returns show that her foundation distributed $390 million in the year ending September 30, 2023, but Ms. Walton has previously announced that The university reported its largest philanthropic donation of $249 million to fund construction of a new medical school. her name.
