BOWLING GREEN — Weston Prenger couldn’t help but grin as he watched his 16th hole of the day, the seventh at Stone Ridge, roll to within an inch of the cup without dropping a putt.
Prenger, Winford’s only qualifier in the Division III district tournament, finished his career with an 88 after lipping out eight or nine putts or stopping short of the cup.
“He was hitting it well off the tee,” coach Michael Powers said. “The putt just didn’t fall.”
This is Prenger’s third trip to Stone Ridge, having been part of the qualifying team his sophomore and junior years, but making the trip alone his senior year.
Well, in a way.
In the Division III district tournament, Winford’s Weston Prenger hit from a bunker around the eighth green at Stone Ridge.
His teammates weren’t playing with him, but they all made the trip to Bowling Green to cheer.
“It was fun to go out one last time and at least get people out of school,” Prenger laughed. “I really enjoyed my time at the hotel (Wednesday night) and it was a great experience today with everyone watching and cheering me on.
“Overall it was a fun day…obviously I could have scored a little better, but I’m not complaining.”
And while Powers wanted to coach the entire team, the experience of essentially caddying for Prenger and walking 18 holes with him was one he’ll never forget.
Women: Freshmen make history at St. Pete University. Winford and Crawford narrowly fall short in district golf.
“He was encouraging and trying to calm me down when everything was going downhill,” Prenger said. “He’s a good coach and we had a good four years.
“He will continue with this program.”
The Royals boast the largest golf team in the greater area, and are by no means empty. However, eight of the 19 players in the high school program are seniors and have helped develop this golf program into what it is today.
And perhaps no one has contributed more to this field than Prenger over the past four years.
“I’ve always played golf just for fun, and everything else that comes with it was a bonus,” he said. “It was nice to win some league (titles) and a division championship and everything that comes with it. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
Crestview’s Cole Bowman chips on to the third green at Stone Ridge during the Division III district tournament.
Crestview, which was the section champion a week ago, finished 15th as a team with 378 points. And while the Cougars didn’t have the magic of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 teams that made it to state, they did get something just as valuable. experience.
“I told them to suck it up and learn from it,” Crestview coach Rick Belcher said. “Maybe I’ll come back next year.”
The Cougars were led by sophomore twins Cole and Carter Bowman who shot 89 and 90 respectively, lone senior Kaden Dickerson with a 94 in the final round and sophomore Kane Patton with a 105. Freshman Xander Washburn’s 106 was a drop.
Gallion and Clear Fork golfers take a bow at Maumee
The Division II district tournament hosted by Maumee Bay Resort will see Galion’s Nate McMullen and Parker Tinch and Clear Fork’s Landon Ball earn one of two individual berths to the state tournament next weekend at Firestone Country Club. I competed for it.
Unfortunately for McMullen, his season and career came to an end Thursday afternoon when he carded an 87 and finished 20th overall. 79 was the advancing score in the playoffs. Tinch, a sophomore, shot a 91, four strokes behind, and tied for 33rd place with Ball, a junior.
