The New York Mets will be the first team in the 2024 MLB Playoffs to advance to the League Championship Series. The sixth-seeded Mets hit a grand slam from star shortstop Francisco Lindor to win Game 4 of the National League on Wednesday, eliminating the Philadelphia Phillies in the process. The Mets didn’t even qualify for the playoffs until Monday, September 30th (the day after the 28-team regular season ended), and are currently four wins away from the World Series.
Meanwhile, the Phillies won the National League pennant in 2022 and won the National League championship last season, but failed to win a playoff series in 2024.
The Mets’ victory was part of a jam-packed four-game day in baseball’s postseason. The Detroit Tigers started the day with their second consecutive shutout win against the Cleveland Guardians, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five ALDS matchup. The New York Yankees will face the Kansas City Royals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have a must-win game against the San Diego Padres in the NLDS.
In last week’s Wild Card Series, the Tigers defeated the Houston Astros and the Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles. All of the weaker teams in the Central Division of the American League won the best-of-three series by winning all two games on the road. The Astros’ streak of seven consecutive appearances in the ALCS has come to an end, and the Orioles are 0-5 in the playoffs over the past two seasons.
In the National League, the Padres played well in the wild card round, defeating the Atlanta Braves. Meanwhile, the Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the only decisive Game 3 of the round to win their first playoff series since 2015, when they reached the World Series.
