Delhi:
Jeffrey E. Hinton, known as the godfather of artificial intelligence and co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, has expressed concerns about the technology he created.
The 76-year-old University of Toronto professor said machine learning and AI will have a profound impact on humanity’s future, likening it to the industrial revolution, but warned of the threat that these systems are “spinning out of control.” Ta. “You don’t beat people physically, you beat them mentally. With AI assistants, humans can do the same amount of work in much less time. But when things get out of control, The risk is always there,” Hinton said.
He also said he worries that systems will become smarter than humans and eventually take over control.
American John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for their pioneering work in developing artificial intelligence. The jury said the pair were being honored for their “fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning through artificial neural networks.”
“It’s an earthquake,” says 2024 Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine Gary Lubukun
“These artificial neural networks will be used to advance research across diverse physics topics, including particle physics, materials science, and astrophysics,” Nobel Physics Committee Chair Ellen Moons said at a press conference. “It has been done,” he said. Moon also pointed out that these tools, such as facial recognition and language translation, have become part of our daily lives.
The jury said Professor Hinton, 76, of the University of Toronto, “invented a method that allows him to autonomously find characteristics in data to perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in a photograph.”
Hinton said he uses AI tools such as ChatGPT4 for “almost everything.” But it’s not a very good professional, and that’s a good thing. ”
“I’m surprised. I never expected something like this,” Hinton told reporters in a phone interview when the winners were announced in Stockholm. He added in a light tone: “I’m in a cheap hotel in California with no internet connection and very poor phone connection. I was scheduled to have an MRI scan today, but I’m canceling it.”
The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded on Monday to American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Lubukun. The American duo were honored for their discovery of microRNAs and their role in gene regulation. The Physics and Chemistry Prizes will follow on Wednesday, while the notable Literature and Peace Prizes will be announced on Thursday and Friday respectively. The Economics Prize will conclude the 2024 Nobel Prize season on October 14th.
