Virginia Tech is looking for its fourth win of the season and second in the ACC against Boston College.
What are the keys for the Hokies to beat the Eagles?
Treshaun Ward The best player on Boston College’s offense is Treshaun Ward. He averages 5.7 yards per carry and is a key part of the Eagles’ offense, similar to Beishl Tuten’s role with the Hokies. He’s a very patient runner, and like he did last year at Kansas State, he overperformed against strong defenses this year. He’s not the most physical runner due to his lack of lower body strength, but he’s actually one of the most agile runners in the conference. It would be a mistake to let him go free.
This seems obvious, but it’s very important. The Hokies can’t turn these small pass plays that Boston College likes into gains of 15 or even 20 yards or more. The offense is built on Lewis Bonds and his ability in the passing game, but other receivers can also make a difference. Reid Harris has four catches this season, averaging 44 yards per catch. Jadon Skeete and Gerrand Bradley have been plug-and-play players all season. This Boston College offense relies more on Thomas Castellanos than before, and Virginia Tech can’t let the Eagles dominate the Hokies’ secondary.
Virginia Tech has done a decent job of limiting turnovers this year, but against a team like Boston College, ball safety will be paramount. Tech’s biggest win all season was a 31-7 victory over Stanford, and the Hokies never turned the ball over in that game. Virginia Tech will have to trust Kyron Drones throughout the game, and if an interception is thrown, the Hokies could struggle to find a path on offense.
