38 New York City healthcare and hospital nurse leaders recognized with Ph.D.
Doctoral nurses incorporate years of education and bedside practice to advance the field of nursing both clinically and operationally.
Only 2.7% of all resident nurses in the United States have a Ph.D.

New York, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that 38 nurse leaders with doctoral-level education were recognized at the health system’s third annual Doctoral Excellence Circle event. This circle includes nurses with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP), Doctorate of Health Administration (DHA), Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH), or Doctorate of Education (EdD) in Nursing. Includes teacher. This program supports and facilitates mentorship and networking among nurses across the health system. It also brings together nurse researchers with aligned interests, allowing them to collaborate across institutions to generate new knowledge and integrate nursing research and evidence-based practice into clinical and operational processes. These 38 nurses join 107 other nurses in the health system who have achieved this level of excellence. In 2022, 17.4% of registered nurses nationwide earned a master’s degree and 2.7% earned a doctoral degree. Currently, the demand for nurses with master’s or doctoral degrees for advanced practice, clinical specialization, teaching, and research roles far exceeds the supply.
