The 49ers signed linebacker Devondre Campbell to a one-year, $5 million contract while Dre Greenlaw works his way back from a torn Achilles tendon. Campbell expected Greenlaw to be the full-time starter until his return.
On Sunday, Dee Winters replaced Campbell in the defensive series loss to the Rams. Winters aggravated his ankle injury after just six snaps, and Campbell re-entered the game.
But Campbell wasn’t ready for Winters to replace him.
“There was kind of an epiphany,” Campbell told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “But like I said, I’m not going to make a big deal about it right now. We’ll see what happens.”
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the 49ers plan to have Campbell and Winters share snaps throughout the season. However, Winters missed the first two games with an injury and is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
When asked about the arrangement, Campbell said, “Well, it is what it is.” “That’s all I’m saying. That’s the reality.”
Campbell had 15 tackles, including one for loss.
