Three days after suggesting that Aaron Rodgers’ pre-snap cadence was an issue in the New York Jets’ penalty shootout loss to the Denver Broncos, head coach Robert Saleh told reporters on Wednesday, “It’s a cadence issue. “There never was,” he said, denying that point. ” and claimed that it was fabricated by someone else.
“There are no cadence issues,” Saleh said. “The cadence problem never existed. It was created.”
His remarks came in response to a question about whether he and Rodgers had discussed “rhythm issues” since Sunday’s 10-9 loss to Denver. The Jets were penalized an NFL-high 13 times in the loss, eight of which were offense violations. Saleh suggested immediately after the game that Rodgers’ rhythm, or verbal cue to snap the ball, contributed to the lapse.
“We need to understand that,” Saleh said Sunday night. “Whether we have enough to deal with all the cadences or whether we’re ready to deal with all the cadences. Cadence hasn’t been an issue throughout camp. (I think) our operations are pretty good. I felt like it was working. Obviously (we took) a big step back today. “
Rodgers was later asked about Saleh’s comments in his own press conference and pushed back on the idea that he might need to modify or adjust his rhythm to reduce pre-snap penalties.
“That’s one way to do it,” Rogers said. “The other way is to hold (the players) accountable. There was nothing wrong with us. We only had one false start. (Right tackle) Morgan ( (Moses) I think we’ve had one false start so far. (It’s) We use it every day in practice, but five today seems like an outlier.
Raiders All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams backed his former quarterback Tuesday, saying the Jets “are going to face certain consequences if our players don’t do right.” He praised the culture created by Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Saleh’s wedding attendant.
“That’s the winning culture that we had in Green Bay. That’s why we had so much success,” Adams said Tuesday on “Up and Adams” with host Kay Adams. . “Obviously we didn’t win the Super Bowl and it sucked, but it’s no coincidence that we’ve been able to win 13 games (wins) three years in a row for the last three years. I think about it in detail and I think it’s important to my team. A team that must demand the maximum. “
Mr. Saleh appeared to be repulsed by Mr. Rogers’ and, by extension, Mr. Adams’ views. This is notable considering Adams reportedly requested a trade on Tuesday and spoke openly about missing playing time with Rodgers.
“They are men and they want to be treated like men,” Saleh said Wednesday via SNY. “They already know they messed up. There’s no need to be ashamed. They need to know how to fix it. And doing push-ups isn’t going to teach men how to fix it. I think so.”
Saleh and Rodgers had kind words for each other by Monday. “We’re always going to push the envelope with rhythm,” the coach insisted, shifting the focus to “getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage,” and communicating before Rodgers’ trademark hard count. He emphasized taking the. He added on Tuesday that “we will continue to do what we have been doing” as an attack.
Meanwhile, Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he and Saleh have a “great relationship.” Saleh also had nothing but positive things to say about his quarterback on Tuesday when asked about his relationship with Rodgers. “Aaron and I are great,” he replied. “I love that man.”
