The 2024 volleyball season is at the halfway point of the Western Dakota Association (WDA) regular season. Each team has established its place in the current WDA standings and will use the remainder of the season to either establish themselves or fight to improve their seeding for postseason play.
One such matchup took place at Minot High School on Thursday, Oct. 3, between two WDA teams vying for the top seed.
Bismarck High School, ranked 2nd in the WDA rankings, traveled to play Minot High School, ranked 3rd in the WDA rankings.
After two frames, the result seemed certain, but going into the fifth frame, the Mudgets won 25-21, 25-17, 13-25, 22-25, 15-13.
Minot High School was led by Kinsri Gilmore who had 14 kills at the net. Leah Walter added 12 kills and a block at the net. Jayda Schall added 11 kills and two digs. Eve Knutson added seven kills in the effort.
Mackenzie Dufner, who surpassed 1,000 career assists last week, had four kills and eight digs in the win and added 49 more assists. Sydney Aberle had nine kills and one block at the net.
On the night, Terrell Regan had 20 digs, Everett Deschamps had 16 digs and Nicole Couture had 13 digs. Maia Bogden also had eight digs in the game.
In this match, there were very few blocks at the net as both teams were able to adjust the trajectory of the ball well and avoid shooting straight at defenders. The amount of digs the Majets had showed their determination to keep the ball in play with consistent volleys.
The win moves Minot High School (10-1, 11-6) into second place and Bismarck High School (10-2, 12-6) into third place in the WDA standings. Both teams are chasing Bismarck Century (11-0, 15-2) at the top of the standings.
The Mudgetts look forward to their next WDA meet against Bismarck Century on Tuesday, Oct. 8, before heading to Jamestown on Thursday, Oct. 10 to finish the week.
Mandan 3, Minot North 1
The Sentinels traveled to Mandan and the hosts won the WDA match in four frames. Minot North will travel to Bismarck to take on the Demons on Tuesday, Oct. 8, then head back to Bismarck to take on Legacy next Thursday, Oct. 10.
As we enter the second half of the 2024 volleyball season, the upcoming matches will be played with a sense of urgency.
