With only one matchup between the top 25 teams, this week looked like it could be a bust. But college football always delivers results when you least expect it, and it did so in a big way on Saturday.
A week after holding off Georgia in a clash of SEC powerhouses, No. 1 Alabama lost to Vanderbilt 40-35 in Nashville. The Commodores trailed by 23.5 points, but won the upset and never trailed. Vandy QB Diego Pavia was the hero, completing 16 of 20 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, and also added 49 yards rushing.
Elsewhere, fifth-ranked Georgia State bounced back from its loss to Alabama thanks to Auburn’s handling, and second-ranked Ohio State looked convincing in the Iowa loss, while freshman Ryan Williams scored another one-handed TD. I made a grab. In the only rank-on-rank matchup, No. 25 Texas A&M defeated No. 9 Missouri 41-10 earlier in the day.
Here are the games to watch on Saturday: All times are Eastern Time and all odds are from BetMGM.
7:30pm | TV: ABC | Line: Tennessee -13.5 | Total 58.5
While Tennessee’s offense has produced highlights thus far, the defense has given up just 28 points in four games, showing that the defensive line is one of the best in the SEC. This will be a big challenge for the Arkansas offense, which is explosive when it’s not turning the ball over.
10:30pm | TV: ESPN | Line: Miami -10.5 | Total: 54.5
Miami is learning what life is like in the new ACC as it heads west to visit the Bears, who also have a late-night kickoff in Berkeley, which also hosts “Game Day.” Can Miami and Heisman hopeful QB Cam Ward continue to compete against a motivated California team that is off to a 3-1 start?
