The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians will be on the line Saturday for a spot against the New York Yankees, who punched their ticket to the American League Championship Series with a 3-1 series win over the Kansas City Royals. They will face each other in the decisive fifth game.
Due to inclement weather in Cleveland, Saturday’s game was moved from the evening to the afternoon. In Thursday’s Game 5, the Tigers had a chance to get a shutout, but the Guardians didn’t relent, and pinch hitter David Frey hit the game-winning home run in the seventh inning.
The Tigers have not appeared in the ALCS since 2013, when they lost to the eventual champion Red Sox. Meanwhile, the Guardians defeated the Blue Jays in the 2016 ALCS before losing to the Cubs in the World Series.
Tarik Skubal will take the mound for the Tigers on Saturday, looking to build on a stellar season that included two postseason starts. The Cy Young Award favorite has yet to allow a run in 13 innings pitched so far in October. For the Guardians, that would be Matthew Boyd, who pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Cleveland’s Game 2 loss to Detroit. Boyd started just eight games late this season after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Game 1 of the ALCS will be played in New York on Monday.
