The term “drought” is often used in the sports world for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs or won a championship in a while. This word has different meanings to different fan bases in different contexts. The 2024 American League Championship Series is all about the context of the word “drought.”
The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series championships and are on the verge of winning the title. The team hasn’t won a World Series in 15 years, the third longest period without a World Series since winning their first championship in 1921. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and the rest of the modern Bronx Bombers are trying to change that. In 2024, the top-seeded Yankees will appear in the ALCS for the sixth time since 2009, when they last advanced to and won the Fall Classic.
For the Cleveland Guardians, the title drought has a completely different meaning. The last time they won the World Series was in 1948, and since then they have only won the AL pennant four times. This year’s version ranks second in the AL behind the Yankees in wins, and got there by defeating their ALDS Central Division rival, the Detroit Tigers.
