ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) – If you’ve seen something like this happening around Ardmore, you’re not alone.

Ardmore Police Department Lt. Claude Henry said multiple Flock Safety license plate readers have been installed throughout the city to help police locate and identify suspicious or wanted vehicles associated with crime. He said that

“This will allow officers to look at a searchable database to see if they can match a license plate to a vehicle. That will give us a lead,” Captain Henry said. Ta.

He said the tool not only helps solve crimes, but license plate readers are already helping police find missing people with Silver Alerts.

“They were driving lost in our city and LPR scanned their license plates and we were able to identify them and return them to their families,” Captain Henry said. .

Captain Henry said plans are underway to acquire a gunshot detector that can record and pinpoint where shots were fired from distances up to 90 feet.

“Every time a gunshot goes off in an area, the sound reaches a certain decibel level. Compared to something like fireworks, fireworks don’t set off gunshot detectors,” Captain Henry added.

He says that by combining these systems, they can stop crimes from happening in the first place.

“If there are people committing crimes in town and they know we have these systems in place, that will deter them from coming here,” Captain Henry said.

The license plate readers will cost $75,000 to install, and the department is working to secure state grants and Mayor’s Task Force funding for the project.
