On Monday, the New York Yankees won the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium, winning 5-2. They now have a 1-0 lead in the series and are three wins away from the World Series for the first time since 2009.

The Yankees had pop star Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in the Bronx, starting the third inning on Monday. Juan Soto started off with a solo home run to center field. It was his first home run of the postseason.

Joey Cantillo collapsed a bit on the mound after coming on in place of starting pitcher Alex Cobb. He allowed the Yankees two more runs on a wild pitch, giving New York a 3–0 lead. Cantillo eventually struck out Alex Verdugo to end the inning. His second wild pitch bounced in front of the plate, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to sneak home. However, in the next inning he walked two more batters before being replaced by Pedro Avila.

The Yankees increased their lead to four points in the fourth inning when Aaron Judge hit a sacrifice fly and Gleyber Torres scored.

The Guardians finally got ahead with a solo home run by Brayan Rocchio in the 6th inning, and Steven Kwan added another run with an RBI hit in the 8th inning, but it was just one run away. The Yankees added one more run in the seventh inning with Stanton’s solo shot, and held on for three points to secure the victory.

Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon took the mound and pitched six innings, striking out nine and allowing only three hits. Luke Weaver came on with a five-out save at the end of the night, striking out Austin Hedges to close out the game. Weaver became the first pitcher since 2017 to record three saves with three or more outs in a postseason game.

The teams resume play Tuesday before the series moves to Game 3 in Cleveland. The Guardians haven’t made it past the ALDS since losing to the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series.
