Hughesville Notes: Hughesville has a big game tonight with playoff implications, one week after a thrilling double-overtime 32-29 victory over Warrior Run. The Spartans (4-4) moved from ninth to sixth in the District 4 Class AA standings, advancing to the top eight.
But this is a deep field and Wyalusing (4-4) is No. 9, so a lot could change, especially based on tonight’s result. Hughesville remained undaunted after Warrior Run forced overtime at the last minute, leading by seven points in the first overtime. As in the season opener, linebacker Brenden Fisher played closer and, after getting the winning sack against Montgomery, stopped Eli Butler at the 1-yard line to preserve the victory. Kicker Keegan Smith also stepped up and kicked the game-clinching extra point, leading to the game-winning field goal. Smith went 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra points. Sophomore lineman Jerry Burton continued his great season, adding two more sacks to bring his total to seven. Barton has recorded a sack in five consecutive games. Fisher, Chase Fowler and Luke Stutzman all recorded over 70 tackles, and Connor Knight returned an interception for a touchdown against Warrior Run. Knight has 10 interceptions over the past two seasons and also leads the area in catches with 56. The offensive line performed well against the Warriors, with Jed Abarnatha rushing for a career-high 82 yards and Blake Davis and Luke Stutzman combining for 99 yards and a touchdown each.
Hughesville Player to Watch – Russell DeWyer: The senior two-way lineman has been on a roll over the past two weeks, making eight pancake blocks. He also recorded a season-high seven tackles a week ago. Linemen are always a monster, and DeWyer and his fellow linemen have to be on top of their games against teams that love to run the ball.

Wyalusing notes: Wyalusing features the district’s most run-heavy offense, with just 32 pass attempts this season. The Rams relied on the run to control the line and the clock, which helped them keep Troy, the state’s top-ranked Class AA team, close in the first half when they trailed 7-6 late in the second quarter. The Rams have scored touchdown passes in back-to-back weeks, often passing through Aiden Hunsinger, who totaled 179 yards against Athens a week ago and surpassed 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season in the loss. . Dylan Johns was the team’s leading rusher until he was injured in Week 4, and he and Hunsinger were both averaging over 100 yards per game. Since Johns was injured, Hunsinger has rushed for at least 121 yards in each start, gaining 259 yards against South Williamsport. Ethan Vanderpool complements Hunsinger, a physical fullback who scored twice in a 54-28 win over Canton two weeks ago. Quarterback Johnny Earle was a cellphone caller and showed off his speed in Canton’s win, returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Wyal Player to Watch – Reuben Kinney: Emerging as another weapon in the backfield, Kinney shined against Canton, throwing a 35-yard touchdown and returning a kickoff 78 yards for an extra point. . He also ran for 59 yards and a touchdown that night and caught Earl’s 31-yard touchdown last week.
Outlook: Both teams need this win, and it’s basically a playoff fight before the playoffs. Considering they’ve had some impressive wins this year and have a strong lineup, it looks like it could be quite a match.
