The deal came together pretty quickly. It may take more time to understand its nuances.
The Jets will be forgiven more than $12 million in fines if Redick agrees to honor his contract for the remainder of the season, according to a source familiar with Haason Reddick’s contract revision.
Reddick will not receive pay for the eight weeks he missed. The $12 million includes bonuses forfeited for missing training camp and eight regular-season games. It also includes fines for missing preseason games, with one regular season game check ($791,667) for every three preseason games missed.
Regarding the preseason game check fine, there appears to be an open question (which has been turned into a formal complaint) as to whether it can be waived. The Jets are willing to waive him if the league and NFL Players Association agree he can be waived. (The question we understand at this point is whether the trade that sent Redick from the Eagles to the Jets exempts his contract from a narrow scope trade with non-waiverable penalties.)
The $2 million daily fine for training camp holdouts will not be waived (and likely will not be waived). However, Redick can get his money back through incentives.
It is unclear who made the most effort to achieve this. But one big difference is that owner Woody Johnson was not directly involved in the situation before manager Robert Saleh was fired. After Saleh was fired, Woody became deeply involved. This suggests the Jets did something they hadn’t done before to get the deal done.
In any case, we would like to get a full breakdown of the new deal to better understand how this works. You may need to read the final contract carefully for this to best understand the situation.
