On October 18, the Wildcats rallied from a 15-13 halftime deficit to defeat the talented Wallkill Panthers, 34-15.
Senior quarterback Brody Frederick completed 14 of 22 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Sullivan had seven catches for 109 yards to lead a talented group of receivers, while his younger brother Dylan Sullivan caught six passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Mazza caught a 35-yard touchdown pass on the first drive to give the Wildcats the lead in the first quarter.
The Wildcats’ running backs responded with 210 yards rushing on 41 carries. Junior running backs Aaron Callender and Giacomo Abate combined for 184 yards, 31 carries and one touchdown. Senior Mohammad Najafipour carried the ball five times for the Wildcats. QB Brody Frederick rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, and placekicker Cole Haskew got the extra point on a perfect fourth-and-4. There was outstanding blocking and pass protection from a group of veteran offensive linemen, led by tackles Michael Hennessy, Michael Miller, Matt Lupkovic, Grant Hubbell, Asa Garner, Brayden Harrison and Wyatt Vreeland. .
Senior Luka Siebert recorded 11 total tackles and helped push the Panthers closer to the end zone in the second half. Sophomore Jackson Miceli totaled eight tackles in his first varsity meet. Senior captain Grant Hubbell’s six tackles and Wyatt Vreeland’s five tackles hampered Wallkill’s offense all day. Defensive linemen Anthony Roe and Tommy Ronan pressured the quarterback, and Matt Lupkovich, Wyatt Vreeland and Grant Hubbell combined for five sacks.
The Wildcats will host the Washingtonville Wizards in a home game on Friday night, October 25th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
women’s tennis
The undefeated Wildcats added a Section IX team championship to their OCIAA and Division II overall titles with a win over Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion Wallkill on Oct. 18. Warrick, now 11-0, defeated defending OCIAA Division I champion Monroe-Woodbury for the overall title and the right to play Wallkill. Wallkill’s victory advances the Wildcats to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Tournament. Warwick will face the winner of the Game 1 and 4 games of the state tournament.
Individually, Grace Cornelius advanced to Round 8 of the OCIAA Singles/Doubles Tournament held at Match Point Oct. 15-17, earning her a spot in this week’s Section IX Singles/Doubles Tournament. Annika Brezina and Celia Greco placed third out of 34 teams in doubles at the OCIAA tournament, qualifying them for this week’s Section IX tournament.
Leah Scalo and Keri Leahey placed fourth (out of 34 teams) in doubles, qualifying them for this week’s Section IX Tournament.
girls cross country
The Warrick Valley girls cross country team celebrated Senior Day on Oct. 16 by defeating the Valley Central Vikings 15-48 to win the OCIAA Division II championship. The Ladycats were once again led by senior Alyssa Dovico. There were many personal best performances at this tournament. Juliette Cloutier, Katie Rondo, Brielle Isernier, Joanna Beauchamp, Zoe Chocalo and Lilybeth Cross all posted season/personal best times.
The Warwick Valley girls cross country team traveled to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to compete in the Manhattan College Invitational, the largest and premier high school cross country tournament in the country. It was a beautiful Sunday in New York City and the Warwick Lady Harriers had a hugely successful event. All athletes who ran won medals in the race. Trixie Wendell finished third in the Freshman B race with a time of 10:01.6 over the 1.5 mile course. Second place for the Cats was Anna Kane, who placed 18th with a time of 11:17.8. The team took third place in the race. Juliette Cloutier ran a personal best time of 19:17.4 over the 4.5 mile distance in the Junior Varsity D race. In the Varsity A race, Alyssa Dovico led the way, finishing eighth over the 2.5-mile course with a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds. The team took 5th place.
The boys and girls cross country teams’ next meet will be the OCIAA Championships on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Sanfordville Elementary School starting at 2 p.m.
volleyball
Peyton Komorski had 20 assists, 10 digs and two kills in the Wildcats’ 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 loss to Valley Central on Oct. 16. Also contributing for Warwick were: Charlene Petreshock (18 digs, seven kills), Genevieve Boyle (nine kills) and Alexa Hansen (five kills and four blocks).
