🚨 Headline

🏀 NBA investigates 76ers: The NBA has opened an investigation into the 76ers regarding Joel Embiid’s participation. He will miss at least the first three games of the season due to “left knee management.”

⚾️ Can Otani pitch? There has been speculation that Shohei Ohtani will be forced out of the bullpen during the World Series, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there is “no chance” of that happening.

🏀 Teams Revealed: Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 women’s basketball league starting in January, has announced the names and brands of six teams: Lace, Mist, Rose, Lunar Owls, Phantoms and Vinyl.

⚾️ Reds honor Rose: The Reds and Pete Rose’s family will host a visit to baseball’s all-time hitting king next month at Great American Ball Park. The team will also honor him with “Pete Rose Day” on May 14th.

💔 Gone too soon: USF men’s basketball coach Amir Abdul-Rahim, a rising star in the college coaching world, passed away Thursday after battling a serious illness. He was 43 years old.

Tonight (10:30 p.m. ET, CBSSN), 17th-ranked Boise State (6-1) and UNLV (6-1) meet in one of the biggest non-power conference games in college football history. .

From Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports:

On November 6, 2010, No. 3 TCU visited No. 5 Utah. This was when both were members of the Mountain West Conference (now in the Big 12). It was a rare, top-five matchup between teams outside of the so-called power conferences.

TCU, led by QB Andy Dalton, won 47-7 that day, but the following week’s Sports Illustrated headline was a stark reminder of how college football is run. “Is it important?”

Well, every match is important in some way, at least not when it comes to pursuing a national title. TCU would go undefeated but would not qualify for the BCS title game (Auburn defeated Oregon 22-19). TCU ended up playing (and winning) in the Rose Bowl as a consolation.

Fourteen years later, we have a true 12-team playoff and access to leagues like the Mountain West. Just in time for the most significant and anticipated non-power conference game in memory.

What’s at stake: The winner of tonight’s game will inch closer to winning the Mountain West and ultimately earning an automatic berth to the College Football Playoff, awarded to the best team in the “Group of 5.” It turns out.

Adding to the intrigue…Boise State running back Ashton Giunty is the current favorite to win the Heisman Trophy (+200 at BetMGM).

⚾️ Interview: Mark DeRosa of MLB Network

(Joseph Raines/Yahoo Sports)

The World Series begins tonight in Los Angeles. To preview the matchup, I spoke with former player and current MLB Network star Mark DeRosa, who will be covering the game.

Some highlights from our conversation…

MVP selection: “Through 162 games, Juan Soto’s focus and discipline inside the strike zone was unparalleled, and it was evident in the ALCS. He was confident in his play. He was very in control and in command in all the big games.”His at-bat was impressive. He will win World Series MVP and become a free agent in 2026. ”

Dodgers bullpen: “One of the big storylines for me is that the Dodgers know what they’re going to do. They have a limited number of starting pitchers due to injuries, so they need a steady diet. You’ll see.” The troublesome Dodgers bullpen will have to play like Yamamoto in Game 2 if Jack Flaherty is in trouble. ”

Yankees’ starting pitcher: “The Yankees’ starting pitchers have a big advantage on paper and they should be in the conversation. Regardless of the stats, their bullpen is not as talented as the Dodgers’ bullpen. It’s not going to be a competition.” Gerrit Cole has to give them length tonight. Carlos Rodon, Clark Schmidt, all of them… their power needs to be a big boost for them. ”

DeRosa (left) joined MLB Network in 2013 and has been co-host of the morning show “MLB Central” since 2015. (MLB Network)

X-Factor: “The Yankees have to play clean baseball. Basically, I think they’ve played undisciplined baseball for most of the season. They don’t have great base running, they don’t do great little things. No. But I feel like our star players will cover that. For example, tonight against the Dodgers, we won’t be able to send Gleyber Torres out in the first inning and throw him out like we did against Cleveland. That can’t happen in this series.”

The best infielder in baseball…This is DeRosa, the infielder at Dodger Stadium, which will host Games 1 and 2 (and Games 6 and 7 if necessary).

Playing ground ball for 20 minutes every day in spring training was my heaven. I ate it. It was like heaven on earth to me. And when you get to the major leagues and have the opportunity to travel to different parks, they’re all going to be beautiful. But you come to Dodger Stadium, and I swear to you…

The infield grass looks like Augusta National. The stain is completely wet with water. Lip, no lip. If there is an infield baseball game when you die and go to heaven, this is it. No gloves needed here. There are no bad hops. I was never afraid of hitting the ball in the big spots here.

📆 October 25, 1986: Through Buckner’s Legs

(Rusty Kennedy/AP Photo)

Thirty-eight years ago today, the Red Sox lost Game 6 of the World Series to the Mets when a weak ground ball to first went through the legs of Bill Buckner, resulting in one of the most ignominious moments in MLB history.

The curse continues. Boston, which was just one out away from winning its first title in 68 years with just a few batters in front, went on to lose in Game 7, and Buckner was thoroughly ridiculed by Red Sox fans for his role in continuing the curse. Bambino.

Yes, but was this really Buckner’s fault? Indeed, it’s easy to blame him, considering that a routine ground ball mistake led directly to the Mets’ Game 6 victory. But if you dig a little deeper, there’s a lot more to point out.

First of all, they still had Game 7 left. If they win that game, Buckner’s gaffe will be a footnote. Moreover, even if they take the lead, Game 6 will continue until the 11th inning.

The Red Sox relievers didn’t exactly do their job either. First, he replaced Roger Clemens and allowed a tying run in the 8th inning. Then, in the 10th inning, he took a 5-3 lead and with one out left, he allowed two runs on three consecutive singles and a wild pitch.

Why was he still in the game anyway? The 37-year-old’s ankle was in such bad shape that he needed nine cortisone injections just to get through the season. In all of Boston’s postseason wins, he was replaced as a defensive replacement late in the game.

Justice for Bill: Most fans eventually forgave Buckner for throwing out the first pitch of the 2008 season at Fenway Park after the Sox won the 2007 World Series. He passed away five years ago, but I will forgive Boston and remember him as a man who had a hell of a career. He is one of only 52 players in MLB history to have 2,700 hits, 1,000 RBIs, and 1,200 RBIs.
