The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers announced their World Series rosters, revealing the 26-man roster ahead of Game 1 of the series on Friday. The Yankees were the first to delete their roster, followed by the Dodgers.
New York will have 13 pitchers and 13 position players in this series, with only three infielders. Oswaldo Cabrera and Jazz Chisholm Jr. will fill the void as utility players.
Left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortez returned to the Yankees’ roster after being placed on injured reserve on September 25 with an elbow injury. Cortez was diagnosed with a torn flexor muscle in his left elbow. Although there were concerns that the injury would be season-ending, the 29-year-old pitcher will return to help the Yankees win the pennant.
Cortez’s participation will remove third baseman John Barty from the World Series and secure his slot.
The Dodgers selected 13 pitchers and 13 position players from their 26-man roster. The team will only have two outfielders, with four players, including Mookie Betts and Quique Hernandez, used as utility players. Shohei Otani will serve as the designated hitter.
The most obvious omission is pitcher Evan Phillips, who is still with the Dodgers for the Finals series. Phillips suffered from arm fatigue and was limited in the postseason. The 30-year-old RHP briefly took the mound in the NLCS against the New York Mets, but was taken off after just one inning.
Game 1 of the best-of-seven series will be played Friday night in Los Angeles, followed by another game in Los Angeles on Saturday. The team will then travel to New York and play two games in the Bronx on Monday and Tuesday.
