This sounds crazy on the surface. (When have you ever stopped me?) But the more I scratch, the more the madness fades.
If the Jets lose to the Texans on Thursday night, falling to 2-7, and a contending team’s starting QB suffers a season-ending injury in Week 9, Aaron Rodgers could be traded. Or?
That possibility is very low. The main reason for this is that it’s highly unlikely (but not impossible) that the starting quarterback suffers a serious injury this weekend. But if that happens, and the Jets find themselves stuck at 2-7, will Rodgers want to be traded, will the Jets do it, and ( (More importantly) Will another team trade him?
At this point, the most difficult part of a deal like this might be getting his new team to want him. Considering what we’ve seen of Rodgers this year, he’s probably more trouble than he’s worth.
He couldn’t move as much as before. He is not as capable as he used to be. And despite his immense power and influence within the organization, he stood by silently as coach Robert Saleh was fired.
Rodgers has 2 wins and 6 losses this season. His winning percentage is 25. Last year, Zach Wilson went 4-7 as a starter and had a winning percentage of 36%.
Perhaps it would make more sense to go to the “next guy” than bring in Rodgers. His personality is too big. His shadow on the entire team is too long. And he’s lost most, if not all, of the hype to sell tickets and move merchandise.
As the saying goes, die a hero or live long enough to become a villain yourself. For Rodgers, his career lasted long enough after he turned heel and became borderline irrelevant.
That’s where he currently lives. On the edge of irrelevance. And if the Jets officially become irrelevant as of Thursday night, it would be surprising if another team wanted to give him a chance to be irrelevant in 2024 as well.
