Believe it or not, 2025 is fast approaching, which means it’s time for me to once again choose the trends I think will be most important over the coming year.
The biggest trends are more than just buzzwords: they point the way to the most transformative technologies, driving profound changes in the way we live, work, and understand and interact with the world around us.
These are “big picture” ideas that every individual and company that wants to stay ahead of the curve should keep in mind. Each brings great opportunities, but also creates risks and ethical challenges that cannot be ignored.
So we’ll start with an overview of the most important trends, and then we’ll dig deeper and explore them at a more granular level as we count the months, weeks, and days into the new year.
Combining machine and human intelligence
It won’t be a surprise if I again choose technology, described as “more transformative than fire,” as the thing that will have the greatest impact on our lives next year.
So while in 2025 AI will no longer be the future, it will certainly be here and now, the truth is that we are still in the very early stages of the intelligence revolution. From generative video to autonomous AI agents and even quantum AI, we will continue to see developments that push the boundaries in ever more amazing and sometimes frightening ways.
I believe the most impactful use cases for AI in 2025 will involve fostering a symbiotic relationship between humans and machines, where AI tools are more closely aligned to assist with everyday tasks while augmenting human skills and capabilities.
Headline-grabbing breakthroughs may take the spotlight: generative video, for example, may go mainstream as technology like OpenAI’s Sora becomes more widely available.
But behind the scenes, AI is trending towards improving our lives in more subtle and seamless ways: AI tools and applications will become more integrated into our personal and professional lives, enabling better, more data-driven decisions and boosting creativity and productivity.

In 2025, biotechnology will continue to fundamentally reshape our world by harnessing the power of biological science to improve health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Breakthrough technologies such as CRISPR-based gene editing will become increasingly mainstream, providing personalized treatments for genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell anemia, while tailored therapies will lead to new cancer treatments with reduced side effects and improved outcomes.

In 2023, investment in the sector declined due to the economic slowdown. However, it recovered in 2024, and analysts expect growth to continue next year. This is undoubtedly due to a growing sense of urgency as evidence of the real-world impacts of climate change continues to grow. We have seen great advances in recent years, from the growing popularity of electric vehicles to groundbreaking developments in carbon capture and storage. I believe 2025 will be a pivotal time as these and many other innovations are scaled up and integrated into everyday life. Particularly impactful will be the accelerated development and adoption of clean energy storage, with breakthroughs in battery and grid-based technologies improving reliability and efficiency.
Global Cybersecurity
In 2025, hackers, data theft, and other cyberattacks pose a huge threat to businesses around the world. But that threat is quickly dwarfed by the threats to society, national security, and public safety. Attacks on critical infrastructure have skyrocketed in recent years, with cybercriminals targeting energy grids, healthcare infrastructure, and even election systems.
