“Celtic join elite, draw in heavyweight division”

Talk about standing shoulder to shoulder with Europe’s elite.

Celtic join a strong group in their first appearance in the Champions League main competition.

They avoided last season’s finalists Barcelona and Lyon but are looking forward to facing current Women’s Super League champions Chelsea.

Former Lyon manager Sonia Bompasta, the first woman to win the competition as both player and head coach, is tasked with emulating her success at Chelsea.

In their midfield they have a familiar face in Scotland international Erin Cuthbert. And Chelsea recently signed right-back Lucie Bronze, who had just won back-to-back Champions League titles with Barcelona.

For Caroline Weir, a return home is just around the corner. The midfielder will return to Scotland with the Real Madrid squad.

Although Twente’s team has no Scottish links, it will be another exciting encounter to look forward to.

One need only look at the result of the second round, an 8-1 aggregate victory over Croatia’s Osijek, to understand that the Dutch team is not a strong team.

Head coach Elena Sadik said she hopes to “surprise the team” at the tournament. But it would be a huge shock if Celtic were to upset any of these powerhouses.
