Most MLB teams played their 162nd regular season game on Sunday, but the regular season isn’t over yet. Sunday was scheduled to be the final game of the 2024 regular season, but there is still one playoff race left to be determined and an extra day will be needed to sort things out. Ten teams qualified for the 12-team playoffs. There are two spots remaining in the National League Wild Card race, with three teams aiming to take them: the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Arizona Diamondbacks. The dispute won’t be resolved until Monday’s Braves-Mets doubleheader in Atlanta. The 2024 MLB postseason begins on Tuesday (full schedule here).
The Braves and Mets will reunite in Georgia after the final two games of a crucial series were rained out due to Hurricane Helen. The National League East rivals head into Monday in playoff contention. The Braves, Mets and D-backs are tied for the final two spots. However, the Braves hold the tiebreaker with both teams and currently hold the No. 5 seed. The Mets won the tiebreaker against the D-backs on Sunday and now hold the No. 6 seed.
Much of Sunday’s drama came from the National League wild-card race. Eight of the winning teams were confirmed as seeds. The Yankees have the American League’s No. 1 seed, but the Dodgers claimed the National League’s top seed and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Guardians and Phillies both received byes in the first round. The Astros and Brewers both won their divisions and will host the Wild Card Series this week as the No. 3 seeds. The Orioles and Padres hold the No. 4 seeds in the American League and National League, respectively.
The only other seed to have its seed changed on Sunday was No. 5 in the American League. The Royals defeated the Braves and the Tigers lost to the White Sox, giving Kansas City the American League’s fifth seed.
As a reminder, MLB currently awards 12 playoff spots, giving a total of six to division winners and then three wild card spots in each league. The top two division winners in each league, as measured by overall performance, will receive first-round byes. This means they don’t have to participate in the best-of-three wild card series that serves as the first round.
