Lawyers for the former president once again accused him of trying to interfere in the 2024 election in response to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s brief on presidential privilege in the 2020 election interference case.
Smith filed the motion under seal last week, asking the judge to release the motion, which was redacted to omit grand jury information and witness names.
In a response seeking further redactions, Trump’s lawyers argued that Smith’s office was being too cavalier about information they had previously argued should be kept secret for fear of harassing witnesses. did.
“The true motives driving the Special Counsel’s Office’s efforts to disseminate witness testimony that it had previously sought to block are as obvious as they are inappropriate,” the filing states.
“Indeed, the department’s implicit position is that all of these important considerations must be sacrificed to the goal of providing voters nationwide with immediate access to unprecedented filings that have no legal basis. However, the filing happened to rehash false claims against a leading candidate “to win the presidency during early voting in the 2024 election,” they claimed.
The filing also again complains of a limited gag order in the case that prohibits President Trump from speaking about witnesses or individual prosecutors. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan noted that the order does not prevent Trump from making such claims in court filings, but the filing said that was not their concern.
“The gag order limits President Trump’s ability to fully address the details of the submissions during his campaign,” the filing said.
