A monumental clash will take place Friday night as UNLV hosts No. 17 Boise State in a game that will have major implications for both the Mountain West Conference and the College Football Playoff race. Saturday’s content is highlighted by a big Mid-American Conference showdown between Ohio State and Buffalo State, and an interesting non-conference nightcap featuring Washington State and San Diego State.

Once the Week 9 games begin, CBS Sports Network will be with you every step of the way. In the meantime, check out the info, storyline, betting odds and more for each matchup.

Talk about huge stakes. As it stands, this could very well be a College Football Playoff eliminator game. There’s a good chance these two will meet again in the Mountain West Conference championship game, but it’s hard to fathom that a group of five teams with two losses will play anyway. This is especially true as teams such as the Army and Navy are competing more intensely. tight. Boise State has the clear Heisman Trophy favorite in Ashton Giunty, but UNLV should never be taken lightly. New quarterback Haji Malik Williams, who took over after Matthew Sulka’s public NIL dispute forced him to redshirt a year, has been a revelation for the Rebels. They also have a pair of the best defenders in the country in linebacker Jackson Woodard and defensive back Jalen Catalon. This is a heavyweight fight and one of the most important matches of Week 9.

Spread: Ohio State -6.5 | Will the Bobcats cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

The race for the MAC Championship Game is very close right now. Buffalo and Ohio are two of the six teams currently with a 2-1 record in conference play, so winning Saturday afternoon’s contest is essential for both teams. Buffalo’s offense doesn’t rank very well among teams in the conference, but the Bulls have put up a lot of points over the last month. They are averaging 31.3 points per game against MAC opponents, but will have their hands full against Ohio. The Bobcats currently rank second in the MAC in total defense (331.3 yards per game) and fifth in scoring defense (24.3 points per game).

Spread: UConn -6.5 |Will the Huskies cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

UConn is the real deal this year, at least by UConn standards. The Huskies lost 23-20 at home against Wake Forest in Week 8, falling just three points short of a major upset. Despite that, they are just two wins away from qualifying for a bowl for the second time in three years under coach Jim Mora. For Rice, this certainly won’t be an easy move away from playing in the American Athletic Conference. The Owls are just 2-5, but one of those wins was an impressive win over UTSA. They have no trouble slowing down their opponent’s offense, but their own offense has not been able to keep up. Rice currently ranks 10th in the AAC, but is averaging just 23.3 points per game.

Spread: Wyoming -2.5 |Will the Cowboys cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

Not much has gone right for either team. Both teams are trying to keep their heads above water to avoid being eliminated from the bowl conversation for at least another week. Either way, given their combined record of 2 wins and 12 losses, neither team is seriously thinking about the postseason at this point. Each has struggled in their own way. Wyoming’s offense averages just 279.6 yards and 17.1 points per game. The Cowboys have scored more than 30 points only once this season. Utah State’s offense hasn’t been very effective, but the Aggies can’t force opponents off the field or out of the end zone. Utah State ranks last in the Mountain West in total defense, allowing 502 yards per game (also second-worst in the FBS) and scoring defense, allowing a whopping 43.9 points per game. has been done.

Washington and San Diego

Spread: Washington State -14.5 |Will the Cougars cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

Washington State had a quietly phenomenal season. If the Cougars count toward the Mountain West Conference standings, they will be contenders. Their only loss this year is to a very good Boise State team. Otherwise, they beat teams like Washington en route to a 6-1 start. San Diego State made a splash by hiring former Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, but the Aztecs have also had their fair share of struggles finding points. They won their second straight game, 27-24, and are tied for the most total points against an FBS opponent this season, though they had never previously scored more than 21 points in a non-FCS game.
