ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, 55 students from Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District (ISD) explored potential careers in the industry.
The group visited North Country Power Line Heavy Equipment School and Midwest Truck Driving School for a day of hands-on learning. A truck driving instructor from the Midwest took students inside his truck to see what it’s like behind the wheel.
The northern students took the high school students to their respective practice fields. Line school students taught how to use climbing poles and ground wires, and heavy equipment school students taught how to operate machinery at construction sites.
Instructor Kyle Montgomery, a journeyman lineman, said the day showed ISD students several career paths they can take after high school.
“When I was a student, I was encouraged to go to college,” Montgomery said. “With a trade, you can do a four-year apprenticeship if you want and start earning money and start living debt-free. That’s good money, good profit. That’s what we want in life. , work hard, retire early, and live a good life.”
Dominic Tanguay said these benefits led him to apply to North Country Electrical Line School.
“Making money was definitely one of the reasons I decided to become a lineman,” he said. “It’s a very rewarding career. I’ve loved everything I’ve learned and can’t wait to improve myself.”
“It shows you a lot of deals,” added North Country student Kurt Bissell. “I didn’t really have that in high school, so I just got a taste of the profession.”
