The toxin was detected in water samples taken on October 14 around the St. Johns River near Mandarin Point.
Algal blooms are caused by the rapid growth of algae. This can appear as scum, foam, or paint on the surface of the water. Algae tends to discolor the water and can give off an unpleasant odor.

The Ministry of Health said sunny days, warm water temperatures, still water conditions and excess nutrients are all factors contributing to algae blooms.
Residents and visitors should not drink, swim, walk, or touch water in areas where visible flowers are in bloom.
If you encounter algae, wash your skin and clothing immediately.

Health officials say fishermen can still eat fillets of healthy fish caught in freshwater lakes where the bloom is occurring. You will be asked to wash the fish, discard the entrails, and thoroughly cook it. However, you should not eat the shellfish attached to the flowers.
If you have health questions or concerns about blue-green algae, please call DOH-Duval at 904-253-1280.
