Diamond Sports Group, the company that operates the bankrupt Bally Sports Channel, has announced that it will stop broadcasting games for 11 of the 12 Major League Baseball teams it currently airs in 2025.
Diamond announced its decision in court Wednesday, saying it would continue playing Atlanta Braves games next season.
Seven of the remaining 11 teams (Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays) had deals with Diamond in 2025. . These teams must: Either negotiate a new contract with Diamond or find another operator.
According to The Athletic, Major League Baseball representatives said Diamond’s announcement left them in a “sandbagging situation” and they did not have enough time to prepare a response.
“We have no information as to what is going on,” MLB attorney Jim Bromley said during the court hearing, according to The Athletic. “We haven’t had a chance to review it, but now we’re being asked to comment in front of the court.”
The other four teams owned by Diamond this season – the Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers – have their existing contracts with Diamond set to expire after the 2024 season.
