The best-of-seven National League Championship Series begins Sunday between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets, with the winner earning a berth to the World Series.

The Dodgers, the National League West champions, defeated their rival San Diego Padres in the National League, and their pitchers pitched 24 consecutive scoreless innings to overcome a 2-1 series deficit and end the series. With the addition of Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers, who are favorites to win the championship in 2024, will appear in the NLCS for the sixth time since 2016.

The Mets have had a rough road to winning their first National League title since 2015, but they hit rock bottom in early June after 11 games under .500, before turning around in the summer. New York had a flair for the dramatic game, earning a playoff berth with a stunning come-from-behind victory, winning the National League Wild Card Series, and ultimately never playing in the postseason. They defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in a fierce National League game between teams with no team.

Jack Flaherty will start Game 1 for the Dodgers, while Kodai Chiga will take the mound for the Mets.

Dodgers pitchers remain scoreless through 30 consecutive innings.

Pitcher Jack Flaherty pitched six shutout innings for the Dodgers, and the Dodgers’ pitching staff has now held opponents to 30 scoreless innings. This goes back to Game 3 of the National League vs. the Padres.

Los Angeles led the Mets 6-0 midway through the sixth.

Dodgers add 3 more points: 6-0 to 4.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Tommy Edman hit an RBI hit from David Peterson to make it 4-0. Shohei Ohtani then hit an RBI double to right-center field, extending Los Angeles’ lead to 5-0. With two outs, Freddie Freeman singled into the left field seats, scoring Ohtani for the Dodgers’ sixth run.

The two-run hit is a good sign after Ohtani went 2-for-15 in the last four games of the NLDS against the Padres.

Mets hitless in 4 games

Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty didn’t allow a base runner through the first three innings, then gave up two walks in the top of the fourth, ultimately stranding them as the Mets squandered a scoring opportunity. .

Left-hander David Peterson appeared as the winning batter in the third inning and will be the Mets’ fourth starter.

Shohei Otani’s timely hit makes it 3-0.

After a walk by Gavin Lux and a bunt by Tommy Edman, Shohei Ohtani hit an RBI homer to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza then pulled Kouhiro Chiga and brought in Reid Garrett from the bullpen. Right-hander Mookie Betts was retired, then Ohtani tried to steal second and was pitched, ending the inning.

Dodgers lead 2-0 in the first inning.

After leadoff man Shohei Ohtani retired, Mets starter Kodai Chiga walked three batters in a row, leaving the bases loaded with one out, and only three of his first 16 pitches went for strikes.

Chiga had Will Smith hit a fly to center field, but he couldn’t hit it deep enough to score Mookie Betts, but Max Muncy paid the price with a two-run homer to center field with two outs. After advancing runners to second and third base on a wild pitch, Chiga grounded out Enrique Hernández to third base, minimizing the damage.

Game 1 of the NLCS is being held in Los Angeles

Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty grounded out Francisco Lindor, struck out Mark Vientos and lined out Brandon Nimmo, taking the Mets down to start the 2024 National League Championship Series.

Dodgers pitchers have now gone 25 scoreless innings.

Acquired from the Tigers at the trade deadline, Flaherty started 10 regular season games for the Dodgers, posting a 6-2 record with a 3.58 ERA.

Dodgers NLCS roster

LOS ANGELES — Relief pitcher Alex Beshear and shortstop Miguel Rojas were removed from the NLCS roster Sunday.

Veisa was sidelined with a right intercostal injury, but Dodgers president Andrew Friedman told reporters he is “hopeful” Veisa will be available for the World Series if the team advances.

Dodgers pitcher Brent Honeywell was named to the NLCS roster in Beshear’s place. Honeywell was placed on the disabled list in late September after cracking the nail on his right middle finger.

Rojas was forced to miss the remaining two games of the NLDS due to a torn adductor muscle. Kevin Kiermaier has been added to the roster to add depth to the outfield, and Tommy Edman is expected to replace Rojas at shortstop.

Mets NLCS roster: Jeff McNeil added, Ottavino out

LOS ANGELES — The New York Mets will be in good shape heading into the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers.

The Mets announced they have added second baseman Jeff McNeil to the NLCS roster as a notable player after missing more than a month with a broken wrist. To make room for McNeil, the Mets removed right-handed relief pitcher Adam Ottavino for the best-of-seven series against the Dodgers.

McNeil hasn’t played since Sept. 6, when he was ejected from a game against the Reds after being hit in the right arm. Before the injury, McNeil came into his own in the second half, hitting .289 with a .923 OPS, including seven home runs, 12 doubles, 20 RBIs, and 22 RBIs in 41 games after the All-Star break.
