Grand slams are fun, aren’t they? The momentum for this 2024 World Series was determined by these two. Freddie Freeman’s walkout in Game 1 set the tone for the Dodgers to take a 3-0 series lead, and Anthony Volpe’s grand slam in Game 4 saved the Yankees from a sweep, but New York took advantage of that wave. Will I be able to keep riding?
That’s the question the Yankees and Gerrit Cole will have to answer in Game 5 on Wednesday. New York’s ace (1-0, 2.82 ERA, 22 1/3 IP, 16K, 6BB) was a dud in Game 1. He allowed just four hits and one run in six innings. Another big night from Cole could help the Yankees take the series back to Los Angeles. In this game, Jack Flaherty stole the ball for LA, but he left the game early, giving up four runs with just four outs.
If the Dodgers win Game 5, they will clinch the franchise’s eighth World Series championship, but if the Yankees win, it would have been possible without the two fans who were suspended for the incident with Mookie Betts in Game 4 on Friday. Game 6 will be held in Los Angeles. .

Brazier makes it through the third without any further problems, but the Dodgers’ hole continues to grow.

Stanton is still locked up.
Ryan Brazier took the mound in the third inning, and immediately Giancarlo Stanton hit a rocket into the right field seats, giving Stanton his seventh home run of the postseason.
This is the Yankees’ franchise record for home runs in the postseason.

Yankees 5, Dodgers 0
Aaron Boone narrated the FOX broadcast as Ryan Brazier replaced the Dodgers in the third inning and Giancarlo Stanton welcomed him with a first-pitch home run.
Los Angeles fans can probably start preparing for Friday.

Gerrit Cole cruising
When Shohei Ohtani strode up to the Dodgers’ bat, Gavin Lux gave the Yankees a momentary concern with a two-out walk to turn the lineup around, but Gerrit Cole is now in full command. .
He quickly sent Ohtani away with a nice changeup, and Ohtani floated into the left field seats. Cole didn’t allow a hit through the first three innings.

And as a result, Ohtani fell to just 2 hits for 17 in the World Series. That shoulder may be bothering him more than the Dodgers are letting on.

Shohei Ohtani got a flyout and Gerrit Cole went three hitless innings on just 34 pitches. We might see a special start here at Yankee Stadium.

Enjoy hindsight. There may be some criticism of the Dodgers for having a bullpen game last night when they had a chance to end this issue. That would be misguided (they didn’t really have a choice, and Landon Knack, the de facto No. 4 starting pitcher, pitched four innings anyway).
They could have replaced Daniel Hudson before Anthony Volpe’s game-changing grand slam, but the mistake may have been in the arm they decided to use. They didn’t use their high-leverage arm in a game where they were trailing by one run in the sixth inning, but they may regret that if this series continues the way it is.

Chisholm grounded out to first base on a close play, leaving the Yankees with two points and four points left.

Banda then walks the judge. With two outs and the bases loaded, it was Jazz Chisholm Jr. This Yankees team looks very different.

Anthony Banda walks Juan Soto (again) and here comes Aaron Judge (again) with a man at second base after Alex Verdugo reaches second base on a wild pitch. So far, nothing is going the Dodgers’ way.

Flaherty’s Short Night
Jack Flaherty’s night was over and dusted. The Dodgers’ starters, who were outstanding in Game 1 of this World Series, head to Showers with just four outs and four runs allowed.
His fastball velocity hasn’t slowed down, but that’s what happened after a sluggish start in Game 5 of the NLCS. However, the direction was perfect. If Los Angeles wants to burst the bottle tonight, they’ll have to come back from a four-run deficit and string together 23 more outs from the bullpen.

Yankees 4, Dodgers 0
Alex Verdugo drives Anthony Volpe and it’s all Yankees so far tonight. Anthony Banda replaces Jack Flaherty after 1 1/3 innings.

aaron judge is alive
That sound you just heard was the exhale and soaring sound of Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge hit a home run in the World Series.
The Yankees captain was in a severe slump, entering Game 4 of the Fall Classic with just two hits (a single and a double) in 15 at bats. But the man who hit 58 big flies this regular season took the first pitch he saw from Dodgers hurler Jack Flaherty, a 94 mph fastball just below Broadway, and placed it in the right field seats.
The Yankees still have a difficult task ahead of them, but getting Judge excited again will make it more manageable.
Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 8:37 PM EDT
After Game 4 hero Anthony Volpe took the lead with a double off Jack Flaherty and shut out New York in Game 1 of the series, they were once again lackluster in Game 5.

around @ESPNStatsInfo: This is the first time since Game 5 of the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers that the Yankees have hit back-to-back HRs in the World Series.

Cole then threw 19 pitches through the second inning and went on to pitch 1-2-3 innings. It was an ideal start for the Yankees.

Is jazz finally getting hot?
Jazz Chisholm Jr. had just one RBI this postseason until he set the Yankee Stadium crowd on fire by hitting back-to-back solo home runs against Aaron Judge. That was his HR in Game 2 of the ALDS against Kansas City.
The Jazz have started to hit the ball harder the last few games, and if they can heat up significantly more as this series progresses, it would be huge for New York, especially if they stay in the cleanup spot.
Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 8:26 PM EDT
Jack Flaherty ends the inning doing a ton of damage. The Dodgers’ offense can score three runs in the eighth inning, but it will be a tough battle against Cole and the Yankees’ bullpen.
Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 8:25 PM EDT
Jack Flaherty could have found the two home run balls better.
Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 8:24 PM EDT
The question here is whether there has been any change in the Dodgers’ pitching plan. They are set to deploy almost all their arms late in the game behind Jack Flaherty to finish this game, and if he doesn’t come back, he’ll likely take a (very long) day off tomorrow. I might.
Anthony Banda is currently warming up in the bullpen.
