A federal jury has ruled in favor of six fired Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) employees who sued the agency for losing their jobs over coronavirus vaccination requirements.

As a result of this lawsuit, the six workers will each receive more than $1 million in compensation.

Driving the news: Employees claimed religious exemptions to vaccine mandates, claimed they were not accommodated by transportation agencies and were subsequently fired.

BART initially granted vaccine exemptions, but workers argued they would not be met if needed. Accommodations may have included working from home and undergoing regular coronavirus testing.

The big picture: Overall, as a result of the jury’s decision, BART must now pay a total of $7.8 million to six former employees.

BART’s board of directors previously voted in favor of a vaccine mandate in 2021, despite significant financial implications.
