BATAVIA, N.Y. (WKBW) — A day of hands-on learning took place at the Genesee County Fairgrounds.
More than 1,000 students from 30 different school districts gathered Tuesday for the annual career exploration event hosted by GLOW With Your Hands.
“We want to connect these kids with great employers so they can stay local and build the economic base of their community,” said Angela Grouse, co-chair of the event.
Students had the opportunity to get an up-close look at a wide range of career opportunities from over 70 local businesses and companies, including major employers, trade unions, manufacturing, agriculture and construction.
“Some kids will be laying bricks, some will be smearing mud, some will be working with calves on the farm, some will be sitting on sprayers or operating excavators,” Grouse said. “They’re really trying out these careers to see what’s right for them.”
“It’s been a great event, well attended,” said National Grid’s David Beltola. “We’re training them on how to use the equipment, how to wear protective gear, gloves and rubber sleeves. We even show them how to open and close circuits on the transformers.”
The goal is to help students understand the careers that are available locally.
“If you’re looking to get into the workforce right out of high school or if you want to continue your training or education at a post-secondary institution, these are opportunities you can pursue very close to home,” Glaus said.
