“I feel a little more confident defensively.”

Defender James Tarkowski said Everton are a “work in progress” but is happy with the positive progress the team has made in recent weeks.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham was the Toffees’ fifth unbeaten run in the Premier League, after starting the season with four consecutive defeats.

“Like every team, we are still developing,” said the former Burnley centre-back. “We are gradually getting closer to where we want to be, but it will take time. We won’t be able to perform at our best every week. Ideally we would like to win every game, but we are currently unbeaten in five games.

“Defensively we’re looking a little more confident. I know Fulham had some chances (on Saturday) but I don’t feel like we were as open as we were earlier in the season. I’m working to get to a level where I can get results consistently and I’m getting there now. ”

Tarkowski admitted Everton were not at their best against Fulham, but Sean Dyche’s side secured a point thanks to Beto’s late equalizer.

He added: “In any normal year when I was here, we would have lost.Especially in the first season, every time we lost, it felt like we couldn’t get back into the game.

“This is a sign that we have made progress, but there is still much work to be done.”
