Sidney Sweeney has released the first photo of boxer Christy Martin, who stars in David Michod’s new biopic.
“Thanks to the dads in the bush, the cats are safe, so I’d like to share with you a little anecdote from my film that I’m currently working on,” Sweeney shared with his followers on Instagram.
In the photo, Sweeney is seen carrying a mullet and flexing her biceps.
“For the past few months, I have been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an amazing woman who was a true champion who fought her battles both inside and outside the ring,” she continued. “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I’m honored to stand in her shoes and share her powerful story with you. More coming soon.”
The film, co-written and directed by Micheaux with Miller Foulkes, tells the true story of Christy Martin, who rose to fame as America’s most successful female boxer in the 1990s. She was the first woman signed by promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Sweeney will co-star with Tony Caballero, Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Katie O’Brian, and Chad L. Coleman.
Earlier this year, Sweeney teased her next role to Deadline, saying, “Christie Martin not only legitimized women’s boxing, she also overcame gender stereotypes and fought against mental, physical and financial abuse. I have a passion for the world of martial arts. Christy’s story highlights her incredible rise to the top, as she struggles to make a name for herself behind the curtain. I feel like I have to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t let it overcome her.”
