Johns Hopkins University celebrated research faculty Thursday night in Peabody Library, including recipients of the university’s Catalyst and Discovery Awards, as well as faculty who have received large external grants to work with JHU’s research and development teams. was awarded.
Johns Hopkins University launched the Catalyst and Discovery Prize programs in 2015 to support scientists. The Catalyst Award supports junior faculty, and the Discovery Award supports cross-departmental research projects. Earlier this year, 35 faculty members were announced as Catalyst Award recipients and 44 collaborative research teams received Discovery Awards.
In his keynote address, Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and chief publisher of science magazines, said that we are living in a “golden age of science” and that scientists are making breakthroughs. He said that they are discovering new treatments and cures. Cure diseases and make amazing discoveries about Earth and the universe. These are “unusual times to be in science,” Parikh said. But scientists face real headwinds. Public and private funding is in short supply, and the bond between science and society is weakening.

In response, he encouraged attendees to act as leaders rather than managers, to build rather than stagnate, and to find solutions rather than waiting for solutions to come from elsewhere.
“Never underestimate the ability of a few people to change the world,” Parikh said, quoting anthropologist and former AAAS president Margaret Mead. “Indeed, that’s the only thing that will ever exist. And when I look around this little room, I see a group of people working in so many fields. So many fields. From the social sciences to From astronomy to astrophysics to mathematics to biology to chemistry. I know this small group can change the world.”
Dennis Wirtz, the university’s vice provost for research, recognized the recipients of the Catalyst and Discovery Awards, which were created in 2017 to support faculty through the process of developing and submitting proposals for research funding. He praised the efforts of the university’s Research and Development Team (RDT). These are particularly competitive, large-scale grants that involve cross-sector collaboration. To date, the total funding RDT has helped secure is rapidly approaching $1 billion.
“When we launched a festival like this in 2015, our vision was clear: to celebrate and celebrate the outstanding talent, innovation, and promise that thrives within our research community. “It’s about creating special, unforgettable experiences in incredible venues for pivotal moments,” said Wirtz. “As I look around the room now and see a mix of new and familiar faces, I feel a buzz of excitement and am filled with hope that this gathering will be the highlight of your year. Tonight. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the winners and thank everyone who helped make it all possible. ”
