TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Arizona has experienced rapid growth over the past decade, and the region has seen a construction boom across the state, especially in southern Arizona.
This surge in development has increased the demand for skilled workers. JTED Construction Career Days aims to meet that need by inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.
Thousands of students from all over southern Arizona gathered at the Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday for the first day of JTED Construction Career Days, an event aimed at introducing high school students to opportunities in the construction industry. The event comes as Tucson has the seventh-fastest wage growth rate in the nation for construction jobs.
Dozens of local and national construction companies gave hands-on demonstrations, giving students a glimpse into various aspects of the industry.
From handling power tools to observing large machinery in action, students were able to explore the various career paths available in the construction industry.
The state had the third-largest increase in construction jobs in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than 220,000 positions need to be filled in the sector, and local contractors are feeling pressure to find skilled workers.
Ryan Montijo, co-owner of Ellison Mills Contracting, said, “Skilled labor is very difficult to find right now, and as older generations begin to retire, we need to fill these gaps.” It’s becoming increasingly difficult.” “There are so many opportunities for kids to grow up and have a good career.”
For students like Rio Rico High School senior Natalie Auama, this event is more than just a job opportunity, it’s an opportunity to build a future. “I was obviously trying to find a job that paid well and gave me lifelong experience,” she said.
Alberto Paredes, a senior at Altavista High School, sees the industry as a way to give back to the community. When asked what motivated him to pursue a career in construction, he replied, “I just want to grow the city and help the community.”
The industry is expected to see an influx of skilled workers in the coming years, as more students like Natalie and Alberto explore construction as a viable career path.
JTED Construction Career Day will be held at the Kino Sports Complex on Thursday, October 24th from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to build your future in one of Arizona’s fastest growing industries. Give your students another day of inspiration.
