CHELAN – The Lake Chelan Research Institute will present new findings about periphyton growth along the shores of Lake Chelan on Oct. 24 at the Ruby Theater in Chelan.

This talk is part of the “Ruby U” speaker series launched in 2024 with the goal of informing, educating, and challenging the community’s understanding of the Chelan Valley and its future.
The study, funded by the Chelan County PUD Public Power Benefits Program, investigated factors affecting Lake Chelan, including post-fire erosion, malfunctioning and outdated septic systems, changes in lake hydrology, and nutrient loads from point source pollution. is being investigated.
Lake Chelan, known in Salish as “Tzielan,” is a natural glacial lake that formed during the Pleistocene. It reaches a maximum depth of 486 feet and is surrounded by a 924 square mile watershed, primarily managed by Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and North Cascades National Park.
