LINDEN LAKE – Thursday’s game for the Linden Lake-Hubbell volleyball team was all about teamwork. The Lakes put together a consistent unified front, defeating the Ontonagon Gladiators with three straight wins (25-13, 25-10, 25-16). With this win, Lakes remains a perfect 7-0.
“The girls supported each other, which was good to see,” Lakes coach Jocelyn Perala said.
Lakes pushed out to a 4-3 lead in the first inning and quickly extended the lead to 13-5 on Ali Corrigan’s serve. The result was a 25-15 victory.
The second set was much the same. Corrigan again became the key man on the service line early on, scoring seven points. Lakes wore down the Gladiators with their strong defense.
“We took advantage of the free balls they gave us a game,” Perala said.
Eva Petaja did a great job filling in for injured libero Ashlyn Steeves. ”
Cleo Milky led Lakes with eight kills and won the second set by 15 points.
Milky gave Lakes a 4-0 lead in the third and Lakes never looked back. Peyton Goldsworthy led the Lakes with four aces on the night. She had two in the third set.
The Gladiators were able to get within four points at 11-15 and 14-18, which was great. Lakes never let up, keeping the Ontonagon girls out of the system.
Emily Burnham at the line gave Lakes a 23-15 lead and the game ended 25-16.
Ontonagon coach Noel Manos was proud of the girls’ efforts. She said she and the coaching staff switched things up a bit and made the best of it.
“We changed rotations, setters, players,” she said. Although it was a different setting for us, the girls played well considering the scenario.
